Bioluminescent
kayaking in Laguna Grande Fajardo, Puerto Rico. Guided night
time kayak excursions into beautiful Laguna Grande to
experience the bioluminescent water.

The microscopic organisms shown above
are the dinoflagellate Pyrodinium
bahamense. The artist rendition on the left shows
the glowing light emitted when the organism is disturbed by the
agitation of the water. With more than 700,000 of these tiny
creatures in a gallon of water the agitation signal through the
population causes them to emit a greenish blue light which we
can easily see. This beautiful light (bioluminescence) is
produced by a chemical reaction very similar to that of the
firefly. The chemical luciferin and the enzyme luciferinase
combine to produce the release of a photon (light) which we see
in this remarkable exhibition of bioluminescence. While there
are other marine organisms that produce light there are only a
few places in the world that can create the show you will see
this evening. |
